My parents have been here for almost a month now. Filipinos, or any other South East Asians for that matter get only one month period of stay in Malaysia. And so, to extend my parents’ visa, we had to go out of the country and go to Thailand. I’m going with them so I’m excited to be able to go back to Thailand again.

Usually, when people wanna do a visa run, they simply go to Sadao or Hatyai, south of Thailand, if coming from Malaysia. You have to stay for a minimum of 72 hours or 3 days before you can come back to Malaysia.

How do we cross the border of Thailand from Malaysia? There are a few ways:

1. by KTM – it’s a train that leaves Kuala Lumpur (from KL Central) at 8:00 pm and reaches Hatyai the next day at 11:00am.

2. by bus – the buses leave from Puduraya, Kuala Lumpur at alternate hours at night, until 12:30. The buses usually arrive at the border at 5:00 am to 6:00 am the next day, then they usually arrive at 8 am in Hatyai.

3. by car – we have done this quite a few times already. You only need to present your car registration and insurance and you will be given a pass. I think. Not really sure how it works.

4. by flight – they usually have a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Hatyai by Airasia but they have stopped it already. Now the flight goes to Bangkok first then to Hatyai.

So how are we going to Thailand this time? We are going by the KTM train. I make sure that my parents take the lower berth. When KH bought the tickets for us, there were only 2 lower berths available. So now, I’m taking the upper berth. It should be okay. I hope.

Octopus Card

July 29, 2009
One of the ways to make your vacation (or stay) in Hongkong very convenient is to acquire an Octopus Card. You can use it to pay for your fare in buses, trains, ferries, etc. You can get it from the train station, I think. All these modes of transportation requires you to give exact coins. Otherwise, they won’t accept it. So it is advisable to get an Octopus Card. You pay HK$50 upong getting it. And you can top up with any amount. The moment you give back the Octopus card, they will give you back the HK$50.
